Aiming to become one of the 100-Year Companies.

Origins

Foundational History

Everything began in February 1968, when the young Susumu Mitsuoka started a sheet metal and paint business by converting a horse stable (the founding of Mitsuoka Motor Industry). At that time, it was a small company composed of Susumu Mitsuoka, his wife Sachiko, and several employees. Riding the tailwind of Japan’s final phase of rapid economic growth, the company incorporated in 1979 and became Mitsuoka Motor Co., Ltd., expanding nationwide by beginning with used car sales. The hopeful young team all shared a bright dream – “Someday, I want to build my own car.”

Business Strategy

Establishment of the Development Department

In December 1981, Susumu Mitsuoka established an internal development department and embarked on manufacturing original cars. Leading the way was the one-seater mini-car “BUBU Shuttle 50”, designed to allow easy entry and exit even for wheelchair users. Since then, numerous original cars have been brought to market. Full-scale production of modified cars began in July 1987 with the “BUBU Classic SSK”, inspired by replica-style kit cars encountered during international travel.

Realizing the Long-Held Dream of a Passenger Car Manufacturer

After 28 years since its founding, the company finally moved forward as Japan’s 10th passenger car manufacturer, Mitsuoka Motor Co., Ltd. In April 1996, their original car “ZERO1” received type certification—a long-cherished dream finally realized after overcoming many trials and setbacks.

Further Growth

Aiming to become one of the 100-Year Companies.

In February 2018, celebrating its 50th anniversary, Mitsuoka Motor adopted a new slogan: “Dreams, Challenges, Toward the Next Generation.” They renewed their resolve to continue taking on new dreams, together with the younger generation who will carry the company forward into the next 50 years of the future.

In April 2024, Mitsuoka Motor passed its legacy—both its history and its future—to the younger generation and to its president and CEO, Tsutomu Ōno. With the recent launch of a highly talked-about new model car, expansion of its dealership operations, and proactive talent recruitment, the company invites you to look forward to Mitsuoka Motor’s exciting and dream-filled journey ahead.
